Gateway

If I had to provide a title for this photo it would be: "Gateway". I purposefully overexposed the sky as the sun was setting to create a sense of mystery. The blurred, receding water almost invites you to take a journey to end of the pier and into another world altogether. The Whisper of a Canyon

I can't help to be drawn to this image. The soft flowing lines invite you to lean forward... just in case the canyon is whispering something important. This shot was captured at Antelope Canyon in Arizona. Jinsei

The word "Jinsei" is Japanese for "life" and this tree represented the epitome of the cycle of life. The twisted, knotted branches, almost symbolic of veins returning life from the leaves to the tree for the winter months. Crossing Paths

In 2011, Andy Goldsworthy, installed "Wood Line", (2011) a sloping, sinuous curve of branches through a standing eucalyptus grove near Lovers’ Lane, the Presidio’s oldest footpath. I met a fellow landscape and wildlife photographer on this damp San Francisco morning, and the sculpture seemed symbolic of the fleeting moments where paths cross in the business of everyday life. 37x54 Print: $850 37x54 Framed: $1550 18x27 Print: $400 18x27 Framed: $600

Classical Elements

In classical thought, the elements of earth, water, air and fire frequently occur together. This old Pueblo ruin in Mule Canyon, Utah seems to bring a few of these classical elements together. The Flats

Badwater is one of the lowest points in the continental US at 282ft below sea level. I camped at this location for over 4 hours watching the dancing light filter through the clouds. I was finally rewarded with a beautiful sunset and captured this 6 shot panorama.

This World's Wonder

Table Mountain was recently named as one of the new 7 natural wonders of the world. I woke up early for this shot and headed out with my trusted 10-stop filter. I setup and captured this shot... a 3 minute exposure... which smooths out the sea and focuses the eye on the rocks in th foreground and Table Mountain in the distance.

Change In Style

Only in Cap Town do you have such a colorful array of beach huts... for changing! The conditions were actually quite perfect for this shot - although a bit windy! The sun had just disappeared behind the mountain - and so I was able to evenly expose this 6 shot panorama as I looked down the line. The sky was also nicely blown out, which helps to keep the focus on the huts.

Paradise

I have long had this image in my mind... rolling hills... becoming more and more faint as they approach the horizon... a soft blue hue... maybe some color in the sky. Well, I did an emergency stop to photograph the sunset, which is another picture in this gallery... When the sun had set, I saw how tranquil the rolling hills were, with the pink after tones of the sunset still in the sky. It felt like a slither of Paradise then and still does today. This is a 7 shot panorama.

On the Fence

Nothing transforms a scene like a bit of snow... and nothing really transforms a scene like a lot of snow :-). This caption has more to do with whether I planned to venture out on this cold and snowy day than the snow piled high on the old, wooden fence. My wife and I did venture out... I managed to drive a car into a ditch... but through it all... captured a memorable winter scene in Minneapolis, MN. This is a 6 shot panorama.

The Hills are Alive

Steptoe Butte... what a beautiful place to spend an evening... watching as the setting sun dances across the rolling hills beneath causing all kinds of colors and shadows to emerge. For the first time, I used my polarizering filter in this 7 shot panorama. The filter worked its magic in cutting the haze as well as helping to get some really good color saturation. I can alsmost find myself getting lost in the yellows, browns and greens of this shot.

Cutting Up the Field

Although the vibrancy of the color in the Palouse at Spring is something to behold, the interesting lines and contrasts are an equally fascinating photographic study. I took a long evening drive and was starting to get a bit frustrated with my inability to find a spot I wanted to camp out at while the sun set. Then I came across this field, about 15 minutes before the sun set. The dual direction of the lines in this field was really interesting... and I find as the eye finishes looking down the first set of lines, they catch the direction of the next and continue through the shot. This is a 7 shot panorama.

Tranquility Falls

This is not the actual name of the falls, but it’s the over-arching sense I got that afternoon as I sat there photographing the whispers of water cascading over the green-rich moss. I was going to name the shot “Clean Green” or something like that… as I wanted people to think about what they can do to preserve such sights. But I opted for the name “Tranquility Falls” because in the fast-paced world in which we live, I wanted to give you a place of calm in the hustle and bustle of life.

Dawn of Time

The drive from Mammoth Lakes, CA to Mono Lake is above 24miles. Not too bad you say... and I would agree. Except this morning, it decided to snow... and I was in a rental... with no chains... and every 5 miles there were warning lights flashing instructing motorists to turn back if they had no chains. I pressed on! I arrived at the lake about 45mins before sunrise and found this scene... a snowy jagged rock creating a nice foreground subject and frame for the rock formation in the lake. As the sun rose... the soft light hit the scene and I captured this 7 shot panoramic.

Second Fiddle

Often it's not only the dramatic scenes that warrant a photographer's attention... but also the small and seemingly insignificant characters. This small shoot from an old Maple tree was doing an excellent job of playing "second fiddle"... in the background but adding important color to this Fall scene. *Finalist in Outdoor Photographer's 4th Annual Nature's Colors Photo Contest*

The Bride

I'm open to criticism from others that I may have an overactive imagination... but I can't help but see the image of a bride captured in this shot. To me it looks as though she's wearing a long, soft dress with a veil and is looking upward for some divine inspiration. You may see something completely different... like a truck driver. I guess that's the beauty of photography and art in general. Let me know if you do see something else... I'd be interested.

Lines of the Louvre

"Lines of the Louvre". It had rained constantly during our trip to Paris… but the more it rained, the more I enjoyed the scenes it created. Crisp air, interesting reflections… you name it! This particular evening I decided to brave the wind and rain for a shot at the Louvre. This was a 2 minute expose, allowing the water to smooth over… and the lines of the pyramid to come into their own. This is a single 36MP shot taken with a Sony A7r and Canon 16-35mm L lens.

Peace in Hard Times

This picture was taken at Otay Lake in Chula Vista, near San Diego. There was nothing particularly daring associated with getting this shot. I just arrived at the lake and liked the contrast of the dead trees in the water. It was a peaceful setting and I thought to myself: "Who doesn't need a bit of peace in their life?"

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

I kind of happened upon this location. I'd never actually been to Treasure Island and as I exited the freeway I found myself forced around the island. I took my first possible right turn and wound my way up a steep road to an apartment complex. I parked in the dumpster area and was immediately drawn to the tree on the left with it's hanging tentacles.

Full Moon Sets on a Bad Land

"Full Moon Sets on a Bad Land". The night before this morning photo shoot was interesting. Holed up in a motel that felt as if it was made of cardboard... with a tornado bearing down! Thankfully the threat of disaster didn't materialize... and instead we experienced an incredible full moon setting over the Badlands of South Dakota. A harsh, barren land that I tried to capture in this 6 image panorama.

Sentinel of Pebble Beach

The 17 mile drive is one of the most spectacular drives in the world. It cuts along the rugged California coast line... and weaves through some of the most scenic golf courses... one of them being the world-renowned "Pebble Beach". This tree has been the iconic symbol of Pebble Beach for quite some time... and I was happy to be there shooting this 7 shot panorama. The misty cloud cover in the background and the soft light as the sun started to set helped to isolate this lone cyprus on a rocky outcrop.

The Fever Trees of Pafuri

Fever Trees are indigenous to the Africa and received the name from early explorers to the continent. As they camped by the rivers... often under the shade of the Fever Tree... many of them developed a fever. Thinking this fever was yellow fever... and believing this was contracted from the yellow powder found on Fever Tree bark... they named the trees Yellow Fever Trees. This was subsequently abbreviated to Fever Trees. The fever was later discovered not to have been yellow fever... but rather Malaria... contracted by the mosquitoes found along the same rivers. The innocent trees never shook the title though!

Wall to Wall

It was an early start to capture this shot... I started the hike up the Virgin River at sunrise and knew I had about a 2hr hike before I reached the part of the river where the canyon walls close in. I hoped that by the time I reached this scene the reflected light off surrounding cliff faces would be working its magic. I was not disappointed! I compiled this photograph from 15 shots stitched together. I captured 5 rows and 3 columns, which provides for the rich detail when you blow this image up. This was done while kneeling in 36F water for over an hour. When I stitched it all together it came out as a 1.5GB file with 244 megapixels. A first for me!

Mind the Gap

The Subway hike just had to have a photo that plays on the subway theme. If you've been to London, you will have heard that statement numerous times as the tube (or subway) approaches. The curvature of this canyon walls catches the light perfectly and gives the impression that there's something approaching from the other side. An amazing spot to spend some time photographing... with the turquoise green water and red canyon cliffs surrounding you. This image is a 7 shot stitched panorama.
